Renaming Black Friday

Yesterday we all celebrated Thanksgiving. I hope the day was as filled with love and memories for you as it was for us. Something that caught my eye this week made me so happy. The number of retailers who decided to close on Thanksgiving day instead of being open for those dreaded “First Black Friday Special Deals”! These retailers decided to let their employees be home with their families this year. To this, I say THANK YOU!

I started thinking about this whole Black Friday shopping thing. How the heck did it get named Black Friday? Um….. Black Friday to me is the day Jesus was crucified, not the day we supposedly start the Christmas Season (we can talk about that in a blog by itself!). Can you tell, I’ve NEVER been a fan of the commercial Black Friday.

So, I propose we begin a new tradition. Why don’t we rename Black Friday? We are starting the season of Advent, (it officially starts on Sunday). We are preparing for the birth of our Lord. Sooooo, what if we renamed black Friday, Festive Friday? We are beginning the preparations for our Lord’s birth. We shop for gifts, connect with friends, and spend cherished time with loved ones.

Let’s spend the next four weeks preparing our homes for the coming of our Lord, born in a manger surrounded by animals and his parents. Mary and Joseph had so little, yet they had it all.

So, today, if you are heading out to shop for your family and friends, enjoy FESTIVE FRIDAY. I encourage you to keep in mind, “the reason for the season”. There is nothing “black” about the birth of our Lord. Let’s turn the black into light 🙂 .

Have a great day my friends!

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
