The Colors of Advent

Today is the beginning of the Advent Season. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming or arrival.” So, the season of Advent is a season to prepare and wait for the “arrival” of the baby Jesus. But, in a way you could say that we are always in the season of Advent, as we await for Jesus to return one day, (but let’s leave that for a different little blog).

If you’re like us you have an Advent wreath with multi-colored candles, three purple, one pink or rose color, and one white in the center. The four candles are lit each Sunday leading up to Christmas Eve when the final white candle is lit. Have you ever wondered what the colors mean? I’ve always known there are these different colors but didn’t really know their meaning. As you enjoy your coffee this morning, I hope you’ll indulge me with this little lesson πŸ™‚ .

The first purple candle, which will be lit today, symbolizes hope, and is called the “Prophet’s Candle.” The prophets waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival. The purple candle symbolizes royalty, repentance, and fasting.

The second purple candle, represents faith and is called “Bethlehem’s Candle.” Before Jesus’ birth, Micah foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

The third candle which is pink, is lit the third Sunday before Christmas and symbolizes joy, it’s called the “Shepherd’s Candle”. The shepherd’s were joyful because the angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them too.

The fourth candle, also purple, represents peace and is called the “Angel’s Candle.” The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace, He came to bring people close to God and each other again.

The last candle is white and represents light and purity and is called, as you might guess, “Christ’s candle.” It’s in the middle of the other candles and is lit Christmas Eve.

As we enter into this season of Advent, I hope you’ll take the time to celebrate the different weeks leading up to Christmas. We are truly in a season of hope, and a season to come together.

Have a wonderful Sunday my friends πŸ™‚
