We spent the weekend making our place festive for Christmas. It’s always fun to open the tubs to see what decorations are inside. Since this is only the second year in this home, we’re still trying to determine the best place to put things. As we pulled out the different items, not only did we look to find the best spot, we also did that “oh man, I love this guy”, (talking about a Santa we purchased at Marshall Fields over 20 years ago), type thing, with every piece.
We put the finishing touches on our Christmas tree yesterday afternoon, and the best part was adding the ornaments made by our kids and other family members. These priceless pieces make me smile every time I see them. Each piece was made with love and means more to me than any fancy ornament you find in a store.
When we were at church yesterday morning, I grabbed a tag from our giving tree. This tree is filled with large gift tags showing the names, ages, and interests of a special group of underprivileged children in our community. This year we are asked to purchase blankets for the kids and to keep in mind the interests they listed. I chose the tag for a little boy who is 4 1/2 and loves superheroes. I’m not going to purchase this blanket, I’m choosing it to make it. You know those, fun blankets where you cut the edges and tie the knots. I’ve made tons of these over the years and they are always a hit. I hope his little face lights up when he opens the package and sees the snuggly blanket covered with what I hope are his favorites.
This year, why not consider making some gifts for family and friends. Take some time to put some love into things that might be a little more practical and more appreciated. Maybe a special ornament that can be added to a collection, cooking spices filled in a nicely decorated jar, or a homemade candle collection are just a few ideas of items you can make with love. Added bonus, if you have grandkids, why not get them in on the fun? Memories are made along with those gifts.
I’ve heard it said so many times, Christmas has become commercialized. I don’t disagree. Let’s get back to the simple gifts filled with love, that’s what Father gave us on that first Christmas, the gift of love in the birth of his Son.
Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
