So it’s December 1st and you know what that means? Yep, we get to start opening those windows or boxes on the Advent Calendar. When our kids were young it was a tradition to pick out our favorite design from the church bookstore. It was always difficult to decide because there were so many designs to choose from.
As the kids got older, they would find designs on our annual shopping trip. Some years they were pretty elaborate and instead of being held by a magnet to the front of the fridge these pieces of art would be displayed on the dining room table. But regardless of the style of the calendar, there was always anticipation to open the window each morning and peak inside to read a saying, or in some cases find the little gift. Each would contain the next little piece of the Christmas story.
Did you know the first Advent calendars were produced in the early 1800s in Germany, but they weren’t the cardboard type we usually see today? One of the first ways Christians used to count down the days before Christmas was to make chalk marks on their door, then they were rubbed off one by one as Christmas got closer. The first cardboard calendar wasn’t actually produced until the early 1900s.
A few days ago I mentioned making some gifts for Christmas, hmmm perhaps making an Advent calendar is another way to use your crafty talent. Getting the entire family involved, might be a great Sunday afternoon project to work on together and make some new memories, or even a new tradition.
Just a short piece of a history in today’s little blog. Hope you all have a great day 🙂
Matthew 2:9
After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.
