I mentioned I’ve been reading about Advent trying to learn new things this year. Well, how about ten quick facts you may, or may not have known. Yes, just a quick lesson as you enjoy your coffee to begin the week ๐
- Advent means “arrival” – I shared this last week, it refers to the arrival of the baby Jesus.
- Advent is different from Christmas – yes, it’s true, Advent is a separate period and purpose. Again, “preparing” for the birth of Jesus.
- Advent marks the beginning of the liturgical year – or you could say the beginning of the church year.
- Advent dates are ever-changing – Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas day, so its beginning date changes every year, depending on when Christmas falls.
- When did Advent begin? – well, no one knows for certain when Advent began to be celebrated.
- There are specific Advent hymns and carols – like Christmas, there are Advent hymns and carols to help us get into the season’s spirit.
- Advent has various symbols – I’ve mentioned a few of these already, the Advent wreath, Advent calendar, evergreens, holly, etc.
- Advent has four themes – I’ve mentioned these as well, hope, peace, joy, and love.
- Advent calendars originated in Germany – yep we covered that one too ๐
- Advent is celebrated around the world – people around the world, while they may have their own traditions, celebrate the Advent season.
So there you go, a quick lesson in some simple Advent facts to start your week. Hope you all have a great day, oh, don’t forget to open that next window on the calendar ๐
