A friend sent to me this meme Christmas day and I’ve seen it a few times since then on social media, “Don’t be afraid to try something new..Remember..Amateurs built the Ark..Professionals built the Titanic”.
Wow, I’d say that is pretty profound and sooooo true! It’s funny isn’t it, how so many of us are afraid to try something new, something as simple as trying a new recipe or taking up a new hobby can make us anxious, let alone something like starting a new career.
A few Christmas’ ago I picked up a paint-by-number set. I wasn’t even noticing on the box that it said painting by number PRO. I just liked the beach scene picture and grabbed it. Yep, when I got home and opened the box I was taken aback by all the tiny little tropical flower petals, and the small changes in the individual palm tree leaves. I dove in and started, but as usual, time got away from me, and honestly the doubts of “there’s no way I can do this”, settled in and I put it away. Well, yesterday I dug it out and started again with the purpose to finish it this time. I made some headway and realized, even if I just work on it a little bit each day, I will indeed finish it.
I also volunteered to host our little communities chili cook-off in January. Now, I’ve never even participated in a chili cook-off, much less hosted one, (although I LOVE chili), so I am clueless. But…I’ve dug in and started researching and my goodness the fun I’m having with this one. I love to plan events, (some of you might know that), and while this one is a little different than what I’m used to, I’m learning a lot and having fun!
I mentioned in a previous little blog that we had our piano shipped down from storage up north. I’ve always wanted to learn how to play and I’ve started to look at that as well. You’d be amazed at what you can learn with some YouTube videos π . Yes eventually I will take formal lessons I’m guessing but I really want to get the basics down before that occurs. I will never be Mozart for sure, but I’ll be happy with just being able to sit down and play simple music.
I’m taking some time to try some new things, and yes even learn some new skills. I’m challenging myself and growing in small ways. I’m an amateur at lots of things for sure, but hey, that’s ok. I think Father wants us to try new things, to be curious and explore our talents, and even share them with others. We get so wrapped up in our day-to-day lives that we don’t take the time to try new things. So, let’s change that.
I hope you’ll join me in making a commitment to yourself to try something new. Take up a new hobby, join a book club, go to a cooking class, do something different and challenge yourself. You might just be surprised at what you can do, and maybe even have a little fun doing it π .
Have a wonderful day my friends!
Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
