I remember when I was in school, we had these days off called teacher in-service days. I didn’t really understand what that meant, but I think now maybe I do.
Today I’m going with a friend to help out at our local Habitat for Humanity location. We’ve been doing this about once a month with our church. The community we are helping to build is quite honestly, beautiful. In addition to the homes, there is a playground, a small pond, walking paths, etc. These families will have their own community, they all will be proud owners, and they will feel the sense of responsibility to take care of it and help it grow over the years.
It’s heartwarming to see so many people come together to lend their time and talents to building homes for others. We even have a 90-year-old parishioner who comes almost every weekend. It’s awesome to see him work!
Also today, a small group of our Marco Patriots is in Alabama responding to the deadly tornadoes that went through. They’ll be providing hot meals and supplies to communities that were devastated.
So today is a day of In Service. People serving people in different ways. We may be in different places but we’re helping each other by giving of ourselves. Some things are very simple, painting baseboards, caulking windows, cooking hamburgers, and handing out water, but don’t let the simplicity fool you. I’ve given a hamburger to a person who hasn’t eaten in three days, (after Ian), and I’ve talked with a new Habitat homeowner, two very different situations, but both are so thankful.
I hope you’ll take the opportunity to get involved in your local community. There are so many ways to help build it stronger. There are so many ways to help others who may need a little hand-up. You might just find a new passion as well or maybe find a new talent. Hey, I can hang siding with the best of ’em these days π .
Have a great day everyone, and also, please lift a few prayers for our friends in Alabama.
Isaiah 58:10
If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.
