The Guild

Every few weeks, actually every three weeks my husband and I take a turn setting up the church for service. We’re on one of the three Altar Guild teams and this weekend is ours to make sure everything is in place for service. I shared about taking care of the linens for our church in this little blog post, a few months ago. Well, that is just part of making sure the church is ready on Sunday.

I love preparing our church for service, setting the table so to speak. My husband and I have a routine, he takes care of filling all of the candles and torches, sets out the readings, and makes sure the cross is polished. I set out the flowers, make sure the gospel book is marked, and then prepare the communion set up. Many times as we are working, it’s just quiet, we’re each moving through the church and doing. But, it’s in that quiet that you feel God the most. You feel his presence as you are preparing his house for a meal together and you find yourself moving this candle slightly, or straightening that linen just so. There is a reverence for making sure the altar is ready; this is where we will remember Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for us.

I’ve been on Altar Guild for a very long time, (serving back in IL), so I’m able to answer questions that my husband has. It’s wonderful to share why we do what we do and to see him get more and more comfortable in this process. Do you know what else happens when we serve every few weeks? My husband and I are spending time together in this service to Father. We’re there serving God together, yet growing in our own relationships with him. Yes, it’s a quiet time together knowing that this work is a true service to Him.

A short little blog today friends, but I just felt the need to share. I hope you find ways to spend time like we do, serving Father together.

Have a wonderful day šŸ™‚
