A few months ago in this little blog, I mentioned I was trying my hand at a few new things. One thing I left off the list, (kind of on purpose), was making homemade bread. I think I’ve mentioned before that I have a love-hate relationship with yeast. I love it in things that other people make, LOL, hate using it myself because it rarely rises the way it should. For that reason, I typically do not make bread myself.
Well, I’m going to overcome the challenge and I’m going to give it a try. You see, I’m trying to get back into doing some of these forgotten arts that our wonderful seniors used to do regularly. Making bread, canning, and pickling, those valuable skills that are hardly talked about these days. They are truly valuable skills, make healthier foods and quite honestly save money.
So this afternoon after work, I’ll start the process and I’m going to have a positive attitude, maybe if I talk nicely to this yeast it will feel compelled to do its thing π . I’d love to know any secrets you bakers out there may have in working with yeast, whoops sorry I digress, that’s for another blog. I’m actually looking forward to working with the dough and taking the time to prepare something like this from scratch. Of course, I’m looking forward to tomorrow when I’ll bake this bread and fill the house with some wonderful smells, and taste the final product. There is something to be said for doing things by hand, starting from scratch, and watching it all come together. There is a sense of accomplishment knowing that you did it yourself.
Over the past few months, I’ve been talking about doing more and more things like this. I do encourage you to take some time to find a lost skill like baking bread, growing a garden, etc. This world has gotten so “convenient”, that I’m afraid skills like this will be lost. I truly believe Father wants us to steward His land and with that comes being healthier. Making a loaf of bread instead of buying one filled with processed stuff is way better for us. Growing our own veggies, ya, way healthier than buying a can off a shelf.
Ok, ok, off my rant on this Monday. I’ll let you know how my experiment turns out, and if my conversation with that yeast later makes a difference π . And…I know this, if it doesn’t, I’ll keep trying until I get it right, a commitment I’m making to myself, and actually to Father. Have a great day my friends!
Acts 2:46
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
