Recipes and Rising

Yesterday afternoon I got a call from my granddaughter saying she was helping to make dinner and wanted my recipe for cucumber salad. Awww, my heart was happy for so many reasons. Of course first and foremost I was talking to this amazing lady, (can’t believe she’s that grown up already), she wanted my recipe, and my gosh, to hear she was making dinner and trying new things, it made me smile.

I had to laugh because like many of you, I’m sure, I don’t really have a recipe per se’ for my cucumber salad. So I gave her directions, probably sounding like my mother did when I asked her for a recipe. Slice the cucumbers, start with a couple of spoonfuls of mayo, mix it up until it looks the consistency you’d like, sprinkle in some dill weed, taste, and add more as you need to, you get the idea… She has seen me make this salad many times over the years, so I was pretty sure she’d be ok. Then she texted me a little while later, “wait what were the measurements again, lol”. I laughed out loud again, as I texted back the directions. I’ll check in with her today to see if that salad was a flop or not, but hey how can you go wrong with cucumbers, mayo, and dill?

The point of that little story is that she is today’s youth taking the time to cook and learn new recipes. I love this and I hope she continues to master her way around a kitchen and learns to create her own recipes, (I have to make a note to send her the family cookbook I made a few years ago).

On another note, so in this little blog a few days ago I shared that I’m taking my first crack at making bread from scratch. I got delayed a day because when I went to start the process the yeast I had was out of date, OY! I’ve shared my love/hate relationship with yeast and it was continuing, lol. Well, yesterday I went through the first steps and I’m happy to say that this morning as of this writing, the dough is rising as it should 🙂 .

This afternoon I’ll knead it and let it set for a few more hours before baking it this evening. I have to admit, I’m getting pretty excited to see how this turns out. Do I dare say I was giving thought last night to different recipes I could try? My goodness if I master this yeast thing, what a wide open door I have in front of me 🙂 . Ok, seriously though, the anticipation of seeing how this is going to turn out is fun. It’s amazing how just four ingredients can be somewhat complicated, but the outcome is wonderful.

As I spent my time with Father before bed last night, I gave thanks for the gift of new skills he’s teaching me and the gift of my family. My kids and grandkids are all doing well. The granddaughter learning her way around the kitchen, the grandson who had record sales of strawberries for his FFA group, (he always has everyone wrapped around his little finger), yes, I’m proud but more importantly, I’m blessed.

Have a great day my friends, tomorrow, an update on the final product, the homemade bread from the oven. Yes, I’ll take pictures and maybe share the recipe, I am using one this time 🙂 .
