Go Ahead be Irish Today

Yes, yes, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. You all know me, I took a moment this morning to do a little research for this little blog. Of course, I know that St. Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland, but I didn’t know his history, which is quite interesting.

For instance, did you know that he was born in Britain, not Ireland? He was kidnapped at the age of 16 by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He spent about six years there, and that is when he turned to faith. He did escape but actually made his way back to Ireland many years later to convert the Irish to Christianity.

I also didn’t realize that March 17th is the date of his death. By the time of his death, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools, and legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Oh, by the way, the shamrock is the national plant of Ireland. Ireland actually celebrated this day with religious services and feasts.

One more fun fact, did you know that Blue was the color traditionally associated with St. Patrick? It was immigrants, particularly in the U.S. who transformed St. Patrick’s Day into the celebration of all things Irish, including the sporting of green.

Now of course, we celebrate this day with wonderful food, corned beef, and cabbage, wearing green, dying not only our beer green but in many cities the rivers are dyed green! So go ahead, be Irish today, and enjoy the festivities.

Hope you enjoyed the little history lesson this morning, have a great day my friends, and may the “luck o’ the Irish” be with you 🙂 .

1 Corinthians 13:13
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
