Well, according to the almanac, I’m dating myself. Now I never thought I would find myself saying I was “dated” by the almanac 🙂 . Anyway, how many of you were like me thinking that the first day of spring is always March 21st? I’m guessing we’re not alone in that boat.
Anyway, not the case…Yesterday, March 20th at 5:24 pm EDT, was actually the first day of spring, and from what I understand, this date will continually change, landing on either March 19, 20, or 21. The last time that spring was ushered in on March 21st was actually 2007. Oh, and by the way, the fancy scientific name for the first day of spring is the spring or vernal Equinox, when theoretically we have a balance in time, 12 hours of sunshine and 12 hours of non-sun. However, actually, this day occurs just a few days before the equinox. And… one other interesting fact, equinoxes are the only two times each year that the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on the earth.
So now that we have the scientific pieces of the first day of spring covered, what else about this brighter time of the year? For me, like most of you, I’m guessing, spring is such a time of renewal. The days are getting longer, and birds are singing earlier in the morning. Oh, and the daffodils and tulips are making their way through the last snowfalls. Buds are starting to appear on trees and the sun is feeling warmer. Nature’s wildlife is waking, and the young deer, foxes, and for us otters are seen all around.
Of course, the brightest hope that spring brings…the resurrection, the rising of our Lord. I can smell the lilies and hear it now, Alleluia Christ is Risen, the Lord is Risen Indeed, Alleluia! Just a few more weeks my friends.
So, whether you were like me, thinking that today is the first day of spring, or whether you were a little more up on your science and knew that it actually began yesterday, just get out and enjoy this wonderful day. Spring is a time of renewal, it’s a time to shake off the gloom that winter can often bring. Enjoy your coffee this morning and give a listen to those birds who are undoubtedly singing a little earlier today.
Happy Spring and have a wonderful day 🙂 .
Song of Solomon 2:11 – 12
For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.
