Holy Monday

As we make our way through this week I wanted to look into each day a little closer. Over the years I’ve of course participated in the major services of Holy Week, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, etc., but what about these first three days. What happened between when Jesus rode in on the donkey on Palm Sunday to when he had the last supper? Well, I’ll do my best to share.

So the morning after Jesus rode into Jerusalem, being greeted by followers waving palms and shouting Hosanna to the Son of David, he made his way back to the city with his disciples. On the way Jesus was hungry, and he walks to a fig tree. When he gets to the tree he sees only leaves, no fruit. Jesus says to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!”, and the tree withers at once. This was his way of showing the disciples the need for faith in Him and our Lord, (you can read more about the fig tree in Matthew 21:18-22).

Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and makes his way to the temple. What He finds is not good. The temple is full of corrupt money changers, those buying, and selling. Jesus makes a whip of cords, flips over the tables pours out their coins, and drives the money-changers from the temple with their sheep and oxen. He says to them all, “It is written, “My house shall be a house of prayer”, but you have made it a den of thieves.” Jesus tells his disciples upon leaving “There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”, (remember this for later in the week, it is important). On Monday evening, Jesus stays in Bethany.

I’ve read this series of events in the bible many times before, as I’m sure of you have, Jesus driving the activity from the temple and flipping the tables. I just didn’t realize this all occurred during Holy week because we focus so much on the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday events during the week.

More to come in tomorrow’s little blog my friends. Please take a moment as you begin this Holy Monday to spend time with Father. Lift your prayers and ask him to bring you into a deeper journey with Him this week.

1 Corinthians 3:16
Do you know know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
