It’s funny how you can go through so many years of your life on autopilot. What the heck is she talking about now you ask. I just mean, for me anyway, I thought I knew what Holy Week was about. Ok, that didn’t come out right, I mean I thought I was pretty well-versed in the events of the week. This year as I really dig in and understand how this whole plan of killing Jesus came together, I can’t help but be even sadder. People who were some of his biggest supporters, people he trusted, walked away from him. But…he knew that would occur, he knew he would have only one with him on that final walk, that one, of course, being Father.
On the Tuesday morning of Holy Week, Jesus and his disciples returned to Jerusalem. On the way, they passed by the fig tree that I mentioned yesterday. Jesus again takes the opportunity to talk with them about the importance of faith.
Within the Temple, where Jesus flipped the tables and drove out the money changers and collectors, the religious leaders talked. They were not happy with Jesus as you can imagine. They did not like that He had established himself as a spiritual authority, and they began discussing how to have him placed under arrest.
In the afternoon on Tuesday, Jesus leaves the city with his disciples and goes to the Mount of Olives. This sits due east of the Temple and overlooks the city. It is here where Jesus delivers a prophecy regarding Israel’s future, a prophecy known as the Olivet Discourse. Jesus talks about the destruction of the temple, Jews will flee to the mountains, great judgments will occur and false christs and prophets will arise. He also speaks of his second coming and the final judgment. The Olivet Discourse can be found in the Bible in Matthew 24:1-25:46, also in
Mark 13:1-37 and Luke 21:5-36.
As if Tuesday wasn’t busy enough…scripture indicates that it was on the Tuesday of Holy Week when Judas carried out his negotiations with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus. Thirty pieces of silver were all it took to betray our Lord and have him brutally murdered.
So, just a little more insight as we make our way through this week my friends. As I said, I’m learning so much more about how these events came together and I’m truly finding myself enjoying the reading of my bible more. Someone once said, as you get deeper into reading your bible, the bible begins to read you, hmmm…love this.
Have a great day all, and make a little time with Father, give thanks for the most precious gift of His Son, our Lord.
Matthew 26:14-16
Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests and said unto them, “What will you give me if I deliver Him over to you?”. So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
