Why Didn’t I Know

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re thinking “Why didn’t I know that?”. I can certainly say that I have. There have been many times when I’ve said that, realizing I truly thought I knew something or someone only to find that there was more to the story.

Last night we had dinner with some wonderful friends, who we met shortly after moving here full-time. We’ve had dinner together many, many times over our time here and shared many laughs and stories. However, last night was different. Last night we learned many things about our lives, talking about parents and siblings, children, and past friends. So you could say there were many times throughout the evening that I was asking “Why didn’t I know that?”.

What was so interesting is learning how much our lives were so similar. We shared stories about grandparents and parents coming to this country, and learning how to speak English. We laughed about our mothers who were small but strong women. We reminisced about their grandfather and my dad who, though they couldn’t speak English when they came here, learned and once they did, they absolutely loved to read. We chatted about past friends and how blessed we have all been. And…we laughed, we laughed about how much we laughed 🙂 .

What’s even more interesting is that this was pretty much an impromptu dinner that came up on the spur of the moment. I can’t help but wonder if Father brought us together last night to just relax and learn. He brought us together to understand more about our lives, and to understand just how similar those lives have been and are. I think in general we’re finding more and more of this. Many times we find ourselves saying how small this world is.

I’ve said recently that I feel Father is on the move. He showed that again last night. Bringing His children, closer and closer together. We may all have been raised in different places under different circumstances, but we are similar, we are God’s children, created in His image.

So, friends, I’m hoping to say “Why didn’t I know that?” a lot less. I want to make a point of asking more questions, learning a little more, and growing more in the relationships of this life. The more we know about each other, the more we find that we aren’t as different as some would have us believe. We are incredible gifts of God, and His love is what continues to bring us together.

Have a wonderful day my friends, and hey, go learn something knew about someone in your life 🙂 .
