A Buddy

If you read this little blog you know that our grandson is quite the character. He just turned 18, but he’s a still tiny “kid”, and he has most of his school wrapped around his little finger. You see our grandson Austin has Down Syndrome and it is so true what you’ve heard about these special people. They love unconditionally, they give of themselves totally and they don’t let the events of this life weigh them down.

When our grandson was young, well younger, we participated in the local Down Syndrome “Buddy Walk”. We formed a team each year, Austin’s Crew, and over the years that team grew and grew. We decorated our team tent, sported our team t-shirt, and showed our support not only for Austin but for the entire Down Syndrome Network. The local DSN is wonderful and they help so many families navigate the challenges they face.

It’s been several years since we’ve had a team for Austin, so when my daughter let us know that she is picking up the mantle to have a team again this year I was so happy. Team Austin will once again compete for the best team spirit award, which we proudly won many years ago. Not that we were competitive. Though my husband and I won’t be there to actually walk with the team this year, we’ll be cheering from afar and of course, will support the team in other ways.

The Buddy Walk is just another way I see God’s children coming together to help each other. These very special children of His are incredible gifts and dare I say, they show God’s love in more ways than most individuals. We could learn from them, their ability to not judge, their ability to see the good all the time, their ability to smile constantly, and their ability to love.

Yes, I’m so proud to have a grandson with special needs, he is a true joy, and I look forward to watching this year’s team come together. Oh and hey, let the competition begin πŸ™‚ .

Have a wonderful day my friends, and as always, thank you so much for your support of this little blog that allows me to just share what God has put on my heart each day. I’m blessed, and so thankful for you all.

1 John 4:11
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
