When our kids were little, my husband and I would say grace each meal and we taught our kids to bow their heads as we gave thanks. As they got older they began to say the prayer with us, and they knew whenever we sat down to eat, wherever we were we would say our little prayer of thanks. Now even our grandchildren know the prayer before meals, and they know, even if at a restaurant, we’re going to say a prayer.
It’s second nature to us now, we don’t even think about it these days, we just say the prayer before we eat. Actually, it’s become second nature to just ask those with us, “Should we say a prayer”, before we enjoy our food. I used to feel uncomfortable bowing my head at a table full of friends or co-workers before I ate. So, you know what, I just started asking people if we “should say a little prayer before we eat”. The response has been wonderful, “Oh yes that would be wonderful, or Oh yes please do”, are common responses. We all say a prayer together and no more feeling uncomfortable 🙂 .
Last Sunday my husband went to breakfast with some friends from church, I’ve mentioned them here in this little blog before. When I’m there, I’m usually the one who leads the prayer. Since I wasn’t there, my husband just bowed his head to say a prayer by himself. Well, our friend Judy said, “Would you lead us in a prayer please?”. Second nature like I said.
I’m not sure why I felt uncomfortable bowing my head in prayer before. I guess I was in a different place in my relationship with Father. I’ve grown in time, my relationship with Him has grown and my faith has made me stronger. I’m not ashamed to show my love for Him and to openly give thanks for the gifts He provides like the gift of great food and the hands that take care to prepare it.
So friends, I hope this little blog today is a bit of encouragement to “say a little prayer” before meals, wherever you are. I do see more and more people taking a moment to do this. It’s just another simple way to let Father know we care, and we recognize the gifts He provides. No need to feel uncomfortable like I was, hey, ask your table mates to join in, you might be surprised how thankful they are that you asked 🙂 .
Have a wonderful day my friends!
Acts 27:35
And when he had said these things, he took bread, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat.
