Yesterday morning a friend, (one of my Marco Patriot Peeps), texted me from up north and asked if I had phone service. I replied that I did. We had been seeing several posts come in for our Marco Patriots FB group, where people were asking about phone service being down. Well, indeed it was true, the Island had lost internet and cell service! This went on for quite some time.
Later in the day, I was sitting at my desk, and I had my favorite playlist going in the background. All of a sudden it got quiet. I just figured that YouTube had popped up that silly message asking if I was still listening. I glanced over and nope that wasn’t the problem, my screen showed that I’d lost internet connection. I looked further and yep, the wifi was down. All of a sudden other people in the office started asking, “Did we lose our wifi?”. Not long after, the office phones went down as well. Hmmm, this was sure interesting.
I switched my cell phone to a hotspot and connected my computer. Ahhh there we go, now I could at least get onto the internet to log into Comcast and find out what was going on. There were workers at the church and actually, some other companies working in other areas of the neighborhood so we were all speculating that a line had been cut somewhere. Well, while I was able to access the internet, the Comcast website would not even come up. I was guessing they were slammed with people doing just what I was, trying to find out the status of things. Many of the programs that I tried to access were timing out as well, so I was guessing that my phone signal wasn’t strong enough to handle things. I shut down my hotspot and just looked around my office, hmmm what now?
People in the office wandered out into the hallway and started to have some conversations. I listened as they chatted, sharing stories about their upcoming weekend, talking about family, and of course we joked about not being able to work, so time to go home š . It was actually a nice little break where everyone connected. The outage continued, and actually, some people did decide to head out, there wasn’t much they could do. I took the opportunity to clean some old files, and organize some drawers, that was kind of nice too.
After about an hour of quiet and no internet, my desk phone rang, well, there ya go, everything was back up. Back to work, I thought.
This morning as I was having my morning chat with Father I thought about yesterday and that little time when we lost the wifi and phone connections. I don’t really know what happened there, but I wonder if it was Father showing yet another way that we’ve become less focused on each other, and on Him. We are so tied to our electronic devices, phones, ipads, whatever the gadget, that we don’t spend time just talking to each other. And don’t even get me started on the people who have their phones in their hands texting while they are driving, and not focused on the actual road, that’s a whole nother issue š¦ .
Anyway, as I look back on yesterday at that time when we lost connection, I realize the opportunity it gave us. Human connection instead of electronic, it was nice. Time to focus on each other in a more personal way.
I realize that walking away from technology is not realistic. However, perhaps there are times when we can just walk away from the cell phone, the tablet, the computer. Leave those things on the desk and go read a book, play with the dog, play with the kids outside. Hmmm, we might just find that losing connection helps us build connection.
Have a great day my friends š .
