Yesterday was a day filled with little to-do’s checked off the list. Did some trimming and watering of plants, repotted one that wasn’t doing so well, cleaned a closet and some file drawers, grocery store run, you get the idea. I looked up at the clock and realized it was 5:00pm already.
My husband and I made dinner, it was nice to grill when it was still light outside, (oy, don’t go there with me, as the clocks change next weekend). We did our usual checking in with the neighborhood pups as they walked their humans by the drive while we grilled. It was nice to catch up with the goings on around the community as well.
After dinner I suggested a game instead of the tv, (which we don’t watch much of anyway). So yes, game night ensued. I have to admit, as I looked through the cabinet and started rattling off the names of various games, we had to think for a minute about how to play some of them. Ahh, we opted for a classic, Yahtzee. Not just any Yahtzee though, you see our Yahtzee game entails using my dad’s dice cup and dice. The leather is worn at the top of the cup, the bottom of the cup is smooth from the rubbing. It’s not expensive mind you, but it’s priceless to me.
As we made our way through the game last night, every time I grabbed that cup and shook it I was reminded of my dad. We used to play a game called “Ship, Captain and Crew” when he was still alive. A simple dice game that we taught to our kids and grandkids. Oh the memories of those days, I could hear my dad shake that cup and flip it over, only to say, “Nothing all day”. It was a term we used when we had gone through all three rolls of our turn and still not have any playable dice.
It was nice to have some time last night to just sit and enjoy that simple game. The memories we smiled about were just as nice. This might be a new routine, getting back into game nights. There is something to be said for the quiet of just being together playing a game and chatting. The memories made are far better than sitting in front of the tv in my humble opinion of course.
Have a great day my friends, and hey, give some thought to turning off that tv when you get home tonight. Take out a game instead and make some new memories π .
