A long-time friend is visiting for a few days. He arrived late yesterday afternoon and we spent some time hearing about his drive down. He had stopped in Sarasota at the Ringling Brothers museum, (a place I really need to get to), and it was fascinating hearing about this family. I have memories of attending that circus as a kid.
As the evening progressed and we made dinner, we continued chatting and I was happy my husband had time to reconnect with his friend while grilling. Conversation during dinner revolved around cars, (ya go figure, two old guy friends talking about cars). However, at one point, my husband asked our friend about where his family actually grew up, meaning his parents and grandparents. Now mind you, we’ve all been friends for about 30 years and what was so interesting was learning all the things we didn’t know about his family. What I realized is, we simply had never asked.
I think there are times when you become friends, and you settle into relationships and you pick things up here and there. Before you know it you think you know all about the person only to discover that you’ve just gotten so comfortable you assume you know all there is to know. Ya, we just stop asking.
I wonder if that’s what happens with our relationship with Father. We think we know how He would feel, or we think we know that He won’t answer a prayer or He won’t forgive. The truth is we just stop asking, or we just stop praying. I know I’ve had times when I’ve felt that God could never love me for past things I’ve done. I’ve felt He could never forgive me, and that for a time prevented me from even asking.
We need to be open and honest with Father, um, He kind of already knows what we are feeling and thinking anyway. It’s easier to just talk to Him and be open with Him, sharing everything we feel and think. It’s so easy to ask for forgiveness, and even easier to ask Father to help guide us through this life. Ask Him to show us the path we are to take or show us the lesson to be learned.
So friends, as we start the weekend, let’s be curious and let’s keep asking questions, get to know friends, and get closer in our relationships with Father. We might just find ourselves learning something new, even when we thought we knew it all ๐ .
Have a great day my friends ๐ Oh, and big thanks to Carolyn Ragsdale for the cover picture, take in Galena, IL.
