The first of December. The day when the opening of those fun Advent calendar doors begins. When our kids were little we always had an Advent calendar. At first, they were very simple and they were on the front of the fridge. Each morning they would take turns opening a door and reading the story of how Jesus came to us on earth. Those calendars got a little more elaborate each year, some of them even containing little ornaments that could be placed on the tree. The point though is that those calendars in a small way reinforced the story of Jesus’ birth with our kids in a simple way they could understand, and actually looked forward to hearing.
This morning as I thought about this date, December 1, I couldn’t help but think about those days when we would open those calendar doors. It made me think of how Joseph felt when he found out that Mary was with child, knowing that he could not have been the father. He was going to do a kind thing and not bring shame to Mary, that is until the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.
When that Angel told Joseph that Mary was carrying God’s son, can you imagine what he thought? He had to place incredible trust and had to truly believe in God and this mission in front of him. Joseph was tasked with raising the Son of God as his own, (well at least until that little baby was old enough to go out on his own). Shew, that is true believing.
Father wants all of His children to believe the way Joseph did. He wants us to believe that we too can handle the mission at hand, to share His love, and to bring others to Him. There are days I know when it’s difficult, but on this first day of December, as we begin to open those calendar doors, let us be reminded of how Joseph chose to believe.
Have a wonderful day my friends, and thank you as always for giving just a little time to this little blog 🙂 .
Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
