Recently my husband and I have been watching old Christmas movies. Some of the classics, you know, Rudolph, Charlie Brown, Home Alone, you get the idea. Well, last night we pulled out Miracle on 34th Street and opted for the black and white version, not the “enhanced version” with added color. Isn’t it funny how you can watch a movie dozens of times, but still get something new out of it each time you watch it. That’s for another blog sometime though.
This morning as I was sitting and talking with Father, I asked as I often do for guidance on today’s little blog. Before I went to bed last night I jotted a note to write about Miracle on 34th Street. However, this morning, the message I got was to write about the reason for watching the videos.
You see, several weeks ago, maybe even more than a month ago, we had a pretty nasty storm here that knocked out our cable. My husband has gone through all the usual steps to fix it, you know reboot everything, unplug the cable, and plug it back in, but nothing has worked. Ahh, the dreaded call to the cable company to come and replace the box. Well, neither of us has had time to contact them, especially since we aren’t home during the day like we used to be. So, we’ve literally been without cable for over a month, and you know what, we haven’t missed it. It is doable, I mean living without the cable 🙂 . There are some nights our TV doesn’t even get turned on. I realized this morning, that the same is true for the radio in the car, most days it doesn’t even come on when we are driving to and from work. We just talk, or we just enjoy quiet. It is totally doable. And you know what…life is better without the distraction of the TV.
Today at church we are hosting an Advent Quiet Day. It’s a day for people to come and just reflect and spend time with God in the quiet. It’s a time to dig deeper into that relationship with Him. It’s a time to reflect on the gift He gave to us, the baby Jesus.
Friends, today I hope you get a little time in the quiet, to have a chance to just chat with Father. It is doable you know, stepping away from the noise and distractions. Here’s an idea, when you head home from work later, give some thought to not turning on that TV when you get there. How about just a conversation with your spouse or kids about their day. Dig a little deeper into that family relationship. You might just find that you got through the evening without that distraction on the wall.
Have a great day friends, may it be filled with reminders of the hope this season brings 🙂 .
