In the Eyes of a Child

Yesterday I spent some time at a wonderful event we have each year at our church. We call it “Cookie Sunday”. Each year on the 2nd Sunday in Advent hundreds of sugar cookies, (baked by a wonderful group of women), are set out for the children and youth, (and let’s face it even the adults), in our church to decorate. Tables are set with colored frostings, sprinkles, candies, and all the standard decorating goodies. Everyone dives in and creates their cookie masterpieces.

As I looked around at the activities I was overwhelmed with the happiness and love that was visible in this room. I began taking pictures and some of the photos of the children had me almost speechless. The simple love and happiness in their eyes, it’s unmistakable. I realized as I looked at the photos, just how precious a gift a child is. Father has given us these beautiful gifts to nurture and love and to raise teaching them about Him. He has trusted us to show them the love He brings, the opportunities to share that love, and to be stronger in that love.

When the children finished decorating cookies, they moved over to another table to choose and paint a wooden Creche ornament. There were camels, donkeys and sheep, the Holy Family, and the three kings. While painting, and hearing about what each piece signified, again the wonder and care in the eyes of these children, was unmistakable. They took such care in painting their treasures, even down to the youngest 3-year-old. Simple innocence, that’s what I saw yesterday.

Father showed me so much in the eyes of those children yesterday. He reminded me that every single one of us was a child like that. We all began with simple innocence, filled with wonder and love.

These days when we see ugliness, we see pain, we see God’s children at odds with each other, we should remember the innocence where we all began. Father is calling us to remember. Children easily share their love, and their wonder, they question and they learn, and they give. We need to be more like them.

As we continue through this Advent, may we be filled with the wonder of this season. May we have the opportunity to experience the love that Father gives, and when we do, may we be strong enough to share that love and wonder with others.

Have a great day my friends 🙂 .
