It’s a Short One

Ahhh, one of my favorite days of the year, December 21st. Why you ask? Well, it’s the shortest day of the year. Now some people would say, wait you want less time in the day? Sorry let me clarify, it’s the day of the year when we have the least daylight and the longest night. Sooo, that means tomorrow the days start getting longer and MORE sunlight, and you all know how I feel about the sunshine 🙂 .

Last year I gave a little history about this day, known as the winter solstice. I truly had no idea that there are actually traditions around this day. For instance, did you know this day is known as St. Lucia’s Day in Scandinavia? It honors St. Lucia one of the earliest Christian martyrs, and is a symbol of light. On this day Scandinavians would light fires to scare away spirits during the longest, darkest night of the year. This is also where the Yule log was born, burning it on this day to symbolize the heat, light, and life-giving properties of the sun. Just a little history lesson on this winter solstice.

Yes, it will be a “short day”, but this year I look at it a little differently. Since it is the longest and darkest night of the year, it will be a good one to step outside after the sun has set, and check out some amazing stars. Bundle up, grab something warm to drink, and just enjoy the beauty of the moon and stars that Father has given. I’ve been mentioning new traditions over these last few weeks 🙂 .

So friends, enjoy the day, and take some time to stargaze tonight. Father put those stars in the sky to provide light even in the darkness. He will always be there to light the way.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Matthew 2:9
After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.
