This week there is a class taking place in our parish hall. It’s called an “icon writing” class. I found the title interesting, especially after realizing what the class teaches. The participants are painting a picture, an “icon” of Mother Mary and baby Jesus. Think of a cross between a paint-and-sip party and a fancy paint-by-number.
Over the past few days, I’ve been chatting with the participating individuals. I’ve been watching their icons take shape and come to life. They started with just these void forms on a canvas, and now the detail is forming and it’s cool to see. Many of the individuals have told me they really didn’t know what they were signing up for and exactly what they would be doing. Many feel like their icon isn’t very good, which I totally disagree with. They all agree though that they are learning so much, not just about the process of the painting and creating, but they are learning how to slow down and spend time with Father. You see the instructor gives guidance or instruction for a bit and then she lets everyone work, either in silence or with low-playing music in the background. It’s a time for everyone to focus and as they paint the depiction of Mary and Jesus, and grow closer to Father.
Many of the participants in this class are older individuals. Without fail, they have all said they are glad they are taking the class. Several have said to me that even at their again they continue to try new things, they continue to grow and learn. Thinking about their comments this morning makes me smile, especially as I recall this week bumping into them in the kitchen washing their paint brushes, water cups, and glass paint palettes. They were like kids in school again 🙂 .
I guess the point of this little blog this morning is that we are never too old to learn, to try new things, and yes to have fun doing it. It’s a new year friends and as I’ve said before, a chance for new opportunities. So hey, let’s learn something new this year. Take up painting, learn how to play an instrument, take a cooking class, or teach yourself how to refinish a piece of furniture. Whatever you may be thinking, go ahead and give it a try, you just might find a new skill set you never dreamed you had. You are never too young to learn.
Have a great day friends! Oh and by the way, here is the icon picture that the group is painting this week 🙂 .
Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
