Lately, I’ve been noticing something. Well, that’s kind of a wide-open observation, isn’t it. There are many things to notice daily, so can I just pick one here? Ok, seriously though, I’ve noticed that I’m seeing more people wearing or displaying a cross. Men, women, and even teenage kids. Yesterday at my little gym, a new “kid” started at the desk. Michael is about 19 and the first thing I noticed was the hat he was wearing. It wasn’t representing his favorite sports team or some athletic brand, no, on it was an embroidered cross at the top of a hill.
I see crosses on beautiful chains, I see them on t-shirts with simple words like “Faith, I got it”, and I see them linking a simple yet elegant bracelet on a child’s wrist. I wondered yesterday if I was just noticing these more or has there been an increase of people openly showing their love of Father and the gift of His Son? I also wondered if all of them were wearing this symbol for the same reason I do.
I’ve always worn a simple cross around my neck. For lack of a better word, it’s kind of a staple for me. I have only three in my jewelry collection, all very simple yet I love them. I have two gold crosses, one a gift from my sweet friend Page who passed away several years ago, and one silver cross, also a gift, that I just love. The silver cross actually splits into three separate sections, representing the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Anyway, on any given day, I’m usually wearing one of the three. These necklaces are more than just showing that I’m a follower of Jesus, they are kind of security blankets to me. I feel naked if I’m not wearing one. Wearing the cross necklace helps me to remember each time I reach up and touch it, that Jesus not only died for me, but, He is right here with me. It’s an instant reminder to me.
I don’t know if everyone else who I’ve noticed wearing the cross feels the same way I do. I don’t know what it means to them when they wear or display it. Obviously, my hope is that it brings them comfort like it does to me. At the end of the day, I’m just happy to see it. Seeing others wear and display the cross respectfully, yes it makes me smile and gives me hope that Father is seeing his children come back to Him.
The cross, a very powerful symbol of Father’s most precious gift to us. A gift we will never be able to repay. We can certainly show Him our thanks by letting others know how we will honor and work to be more like the man who gave his life for us. I will humbly wear my cross necklaces, letting others openly know my love of Christ. I hope to keep “noticing something” each day, the symbol of the cross.
Have a great day my friends 🙂
Mark 8:34
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”.
