I was talking with a friend the other day, and she was sharing her excitement about the possibility of renting a house. She has been renting a condo for the last few years, and she has really wanted to just get into a house. She said to me, “I need to be able to get my hands in the dirt again. I want to be able to do some painting and planting and just things you can do in a house without the condo restrictions”. I could relate. I told her one of the things I missed the most about being back home was being able to plant things all around my yard. I miss the digging in the dirt for sure.
I thought a lot about what she said last night while my husband and I were cooking dinner. Well, that’s what spurred me to get back to making bread. If you’ve been reading this little blog very long you know that last year I did some experimenting with sourdough. I had some success, (and some failures), at making my starter, but my travel schedule got crazy and I couldn’t keep it going. So today, I’m back at it, trying my hand at making bread. Not the sourdough mind you, (but I will get back there at some point), but working on a recipe that has turned out well in the past. And…I just might find myself doing some other baking today as well, seems like a day for that.
Oh, and the digging in the dirt thing, ya, going to do just a little of that as well. I have a couple of flower pots that are looking pretty pitiful and need some new plants. It’s not my big spacious area from back home, but even the little things like sprucing up my flower pots will make me feel better.
Yes, today is a day of using my hands. It really is therapeutic, using your hands to make things, build things and yes dig in the dirt. Father gave us these gifts to use them accordingly. Today, they will be used to make some things, that might just find their way to neighbors’ doors π .
Have a wonderful day my friends, may it be filled with opportunities to do some homesteading-type things. Go ahead give it a try, get back to making the bread, digging in the dirt, needlepointing, working in the shop, or whatever your talent calls you to do. Oh, and while you’re working with those hands, spend a little time chatting with Father.
1 Thessalonians 4:11
And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you.
