I shared several weeks ago that my husband and I were having a piece of furniture restored. It was my mother-in-law’s secretary desk. We aren’t quite sure but we believe it was actually her mother’s before that. We asked the man who restored it if he could tell how old it was. He commented that he could be as old as 1890 ๐ . That, I wasn’t expecting.
Well, last night he returned the desk to us. To say that his pictures from the shop didn’t do it just, well that would be a slight understatement. The desk, which is made of mahogany, was scratched and stained when it left. The leather insets on top were peeling and damaged. The desk itself was a faded brown. What we got back last night was nothing short of gorgeous. The mahogany wood shined, the intricately carved designs on the feet of the desk, well, I didn’t even know those were there before, the leather fully restored, the handles on the drawers polished. It’s amazing what he did with this piece. Granted, this desk was always a solid piece of furniture, it was made very well.
This morning as I sat down to write this little blog, I couldn’t help but think about how Father is like the man who restored our desk. Each day Father is working to restore us to where we were originally. Think about it, we are born without sin, and we are made incredibly well, Father knew what he was doing when He created his children. Over time, we wear and tear, and accumulate scratches and dents, meaning we sin, we do things we shouldn’t or we don’t do things we should.
With Father’s hands though He works to buff out the scratches, polish the handles, buff, and restore the leather. He gives us love and care and does His best to restore us to our original self. He asks us to seek forgiveness and to forgive. With each little step, He restores our soul.
Yes my friends, just like our beautiful desk, we too can be restored. We simply need to ask Father to work on us, the way the man worked on our desk. Then, as we feel Him working in us, we need to do our part to keep it that way, just like we need to now take special care of our desk so it stays looking like new.
Have a great day my friends, and remember, we too can be restored ๐ .
p.s. Thanks to my friend Ann Hudon for the cover picture from last night’s sunset.
2 Corinthians 13:11
Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.
