A Loaf of Bread

Yesterday I was chatting with a friend who came by the office for a meeting. I asked her if she wanted a cup of coffee, she said no and shared that she was going to a local coffee cafe after her meeting. She went on to tell me that not only did they have the most amazing coffee, they had the best baguette you will ever eat. I asked her for more details about this wonderful place.

She explained that it was a small Italian place with wonderful food. Now back to that baguette. She said that her husband didn’t usually eat bread, but he would buy these and freeze them. “He’ll buy a sub sandwich, (at a chain sub shop), bring it home, and replace the bread with one of the baguettes”. I told her I’d been on the hunt for a good bakery in town with bread like this and looked forward to trying it. We said our goodbyes when she headed out after her meeting and I told her to enjoy that coffee.

A little later in the day I came back into the office from taking care of a project, and swung by my husband’s office. He mentioned that my friend had come back, “She told me that she left something for you on your desk”. Great I thought. As I stepped into my office, I knew immediately what it was. Yes, there on my desk was a brown paper bag, containing that still warm loaf of baguette πŸ™‚ . Oh my goodness, the smell alone was awesome. I texted a huge thank you to her and of course, she encouraged me to nibble if needed before the day was out.

This morning as I thought about that simple little gift of a loaf of bread I was reminded of how bread has always been a gift of love. Whether the bread is made by the giver or purchased from a market or bakery, giving bread is a gift of love. It’s sharing the sentiment, “May you never be hungry”. Jesus fed the many with loaves and fishes, and of course, He broke bread during the last supper with his disciples.

The act of sharing this gift, her thinking of me and making the time to come back to deliver it, that was even more of a gift. It’s acts like these my friends, that make Father smile. These are the acts that will make this world and this life a better place. Thank you again to my sweet friend for this simple but special gift. Oh, and we dug into that baguette last night, it was indeed awesome πŸ™‚ .

Have a great day my friends!
