Over the weekend my husband and I made a trip to our storage unit to pick up my golf clubs. Yes, they’ve been tucked away there since we moved down here full-time. Sad I know, but time has simply gotten away from me when it comes to playing golf. Well, that changes next week when I spend some time with the senior golf group that I work with to plan their events. They needed an extra person a couple of the days so I’m dusting off the clubs, (you might want to say a little prayer for me ’cause it could be kind of ugly when I step up to the t).
Anyway, back to the storage unit. The afternoon was gorgeous so we decided to take the convertible. We were going to make a quick trip to the store on the way home for just a few items, so we were confident that my clubs and a bag or two from the store would fit fine in the car. We did debate about taking our SUV, but the weather was just too nice.
We got to our unit and I grabbed some other things I needed for the golf event next weekend, some name tags, gift bags, etc. The next thing I knew, my husband had set my bag outside the door, along with HIS golf bag. Oh boy, now we’re transporting two sets of clubs and the other stuff we picked up on the way home. Well, this should be interesting.
We made our way back down to the car. In went my husband’s bag first, no problem. Then mine on top, easy peasy right? Well…we had to do some arranging, and some pulling out of clubs, but yep we got them in there. Just then a memory came to mind from many, many years ago. We had made the drive down to Marco Island to visit my dad for a week. Our kids were little like our youngest was only 18 months old or so. We had a Ford Probe with a really deep trunk. Believe it or not, we got our suitcases, our golf clubs, a large cooler, and two kids stuffed into that little car and drove it all the way to Florida and back. It was a long trip but man we had a blast. We were all together in that little car for days. Now granted, my husband and I were much younger, still, it was a trek, but we had fun.
When we got home from our storage unit, we laughed about the memories of that Florida trip. We spent the rest of that evening listening to some old radio programs that I found on YouTube. If you’re a midwesterner you remember WLS radio, 89.0 on the dial. WLS was playing on the radio when we made that trip to Florida over 30 years ago. The togetherness we felt as a family on that trip was priceless. The togetherness that we felt a few nights ago playing remember when, just as priceless.
I’m not quite sure why Father is bringing us down memory lane so much lately, but I enjoy it. Recalling simpler times when life wasn’t as hectic. We didn’t have much when we were growing up, and in those early years of marriage, we ate our share of ramen noodles. But you know what, I wouldn’t trade those times for anything.
I’m not sure our kids would remember being stuffed in the back of the car as fondly as we do, but hey they were little and much more limber back then 🙂 . Have a wonderful day my friends, may it be filled with opportunities for togetherness, to make memories that will last a lifetime 🙂 .
