It’s an old phrase that, as I’ve read, dates as far back as the 1600’s. It didn’t actually begin as forgive and forget, it was first quoted as “Let us forget and forgive injuries.” Shakespeare also used the phrase in King Lear, “Pray you now, forget and forgive”. I’m not sure when the phrase was switched around to say forgive and forget, but I think it’s more important to have the forgiveness piece first.
I was talking with a friend yesterday about this phrase. It was a good discussion about how much we change when we are able to forgive. More importantly, we ourselves heal when we are able to forgive. I think to be honest that we can physically heal when we are able to forgive and let a past hurt be forgotten. Our heart heals, our mind clears, and our mood changes, all with simple words, “I forgive”.
Father asks us to forgive, just as He forgives us when we ask. He doesn’t hold past offenses against us, especially if we right the path that caused us to ask for that forgiveness. He lets it go so to speak and welcomes us back into His loving arms. So in turn, He asks that we do the same with those who may have hurt us, even unknowingly.
We also need to remember the forgetting part as well though. Once we truly forgive, then let the pain and hurt go, forget it, and don’t let it have control any longer. I think if we recall how that pain made us feel, hurt, sorrow, whatever other feelings we may have had, why would we want to carry that? Why would we not want to forget it?
Friends, when we truly trust in Father, when we can give our pain to Him through the forgiveness of others, it’s then that we are able to heal ourselves. We are all His children, we all make mistakes, we all stumble at times, and we are all imperfect. So let’s not let past pains control us, let’s not allow satan to keep them alive in us, (he loves to do that you know). Two simple little words can squash him like a bug…”I Forgive”. Then, forget the pain and allow the Father’s healing power to do its thing π .
Have a great day my friends π .
