My husband and I were chatting last night before dinner. I wandered over to the bay window in our kitchen to look at an aloe plant that sits on our kitchen table. It really does love where it’s positioned, it seems like every day there is a new leaf appearing. It has grown to be quite large actually.
You might be thinking, “Big deal, it’s an aloe plant that likes being in your kitchen window”. Well, let me share a little about this particular plant. My husband brought it home after his mom passed away, that was almost 25 years ago. It sat in the kitchen window of her farmhouse for as long as I had known her. Remember a few days ago in this little blog when I mentioned that my husband and I have been together for almost 40 years? Well, yes that little aloe plant has been there too 🙂 . My husband said last night that he believes that plant goes back to at least his high school days if not before.
Now admittedly, at the farm, it had become pretty pitiful. Just a leaf or two. It had been quite a while since it had been cared for, as my mother-in-law had been ill for quite some time. So, my husband brought the little thing home and he began to care for it, (did I mention that he truly has a green thumb). We repotted it and moved it around different locations in our home up north. I got healthier but never really took off.
When we moved to Florida it sat in the car right behind the seat for the lengthy drive. It’s made its way to the kitchen table, where even in the first few years here it struggled. Finally, about a year ago I totally changed the soil, placed it in a slightly larger pot and all of a sudden it starts to show signs it likes its new home. My husband takes care of it, I don’t water it, turn it, nope, I don’t want the responsibility 🙂 . It is like a weed now, has the most beautiful full leaves, and more coming out every day.
So, just how does a plant like this survive so long with so little care? Well, you know what I’m going to say, its roots are incredibly strong. Those roots, combined with its desire to live, kept it alive when in all honesty it should not have been. Now, being properly cared for, its roots are growing even stronger.
Our relationship with Father is much the same. If we are rooted solidly in that relationship, if we have the desire to do his work, share his love, and live this life, then we will be strong and can overcome anything. I love this “little” plant and all that it stands for. May we all be “rooted” in our faith the way it is 🙂 .
Have a great day my friends. Side note, the cover of today’s little blog is another awesome sunset from our driveway last night. Father is giving us some pretty amazing canvas’ after these rains!
1 Colossians 2:6-7
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
