Recently I’ve taken on a new hobby. I’m not going to get into all the details at this point, at least until I know more about what I’m doing. I’ve found an online group of people who have much experience with this hobby and last night I made my first post about being a “newbie”. I was so pleasantly surprised at the support and tips I received on that little post. People were sharing their tips, they were encouraging me that they all started somewhere and that it wouldn’t take long before I was totally comfortable.
What struck me as I read the conversation thread throughout the evening, and even this morning is how everyone was focused on helping each other. Some comments mentioned how much better things would be if we did more of this helping each other learn instead of just complaining about someone who “doesn’t know what they’re doing”.
I’ve been a little overwhelmed thinking about all the things I have to learn taking on this hobby, and I’m not sure why. I’ve done a lot of things in my life, and each time I’ve had to learn what I’m doing. Marriage, motherhood, different career positions, sports hobbies, (although golf still baffles me at times), learning to fish in salt water instead of fresh, and even making bread, which you all know has been a learning process.
At the end of the day, we do have to start somewhere and if we have the support of family and friends, then the learning becomes fun and not a daunting task. Then, once we settle in and become comfortable, it’s on us to share that knowledge with the next newbie. Pay it forward so to speak, or as a friend once mentioned, leave the ladder down so that others can have an easier climb.
Father wants us to be curious, He wants us to grow and to learn new things. I also think He wants us to share and help others grow and learn. Simple things like this bring us closer together as His children.
So yes, I’m starting a new hobby, and one day I won’t be a newbie any longer. Until then, I’ll keep asking for help and enjoy the process of learning from others. I’ll share more here in this little blog as I get my feet under me.
Have a great day my friends, and hey, lend a hand, share a tip, or give an encouraging word to someone today, you might be surprised by the difference you can make š .
