We have a few special volunteers at our church. Well, all of our volunteers are special, however this group handles a ministry that has a special place in my heart. You see my husband and I participated in it for many, many years back home, and are looking to start back into it.
This group of people is trained to take communion to people who cannot come to church. Many of them are homebound, in the hospital or rehab facilities. This week one such volunteer will take one of the communion kits that we have, it contains a small ceramic cup, several small altar linens, a small bottle of consecrated wine, and a few consecrated hosts, (bread wafers). The volunteer will set the communion table and will share the bread and wine during a short service with the individual they are visiting. It is truly a ministry of the heart and a very special time, not only for the homebound person but for the volunteer.
This morning I was thinking about this ministry. You see tomorrow I will prepare that little kit when I set up the church for Sunday service. The kit will be consecrated and blessed during the service and handed to the volunteer before they leave that morning.
As I thought about these kits that we use to share Jesus I started to ponder the ways that all of us share our “kits” with others. In what ways do we as God’s children share more of ourselves, more of Jesus’ love with others? I’ve mentioned some of these things many times here in this little blog, but I don’t think we can share too much π . Simple things like taking fresh veggies or flowers from your garden to a neighbor, baking cookies and dropping them at the local fire station, or volunteer to read to residents at the assisted living facility in your community, are just some ways of showing Father’s love.
We can all have our own little “communion kit”, ways of sharing Jesus with others. It doesn’t have to be formally consecrated, it’s just ways that you can care for others as Father cares for us. What is important is that we open that kit regularly to share its contents π . Have a great day my friends, and thank you as always for being here to read my little brain dumps!
Continued prayers lifted for Emily Rea and her family. She is still missing and the search continues every day. Father, please bring your child Emily home to her family, in Jesus name we pray, Amen.
p.s. thanks to my friend Jenny Tipsword for the beautiful sunset from the midwest bean fields, the cover of today’s little blog.
John 6:35
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst”.
