Bringing Out the Best

It’s been difficult for everyone over the past few days to see the images coming out of TN, NC, and FL. They are images that will never be forgotten, things we’ve never seen before in our lifetime.

Something happened yesterday afternoon though. I began noticing pictures and videos being posted that showed not the devastation but the rescues, the volunteers, the best of people. There was a video of volunteers in boats saving animals from rooftops. Another video showed four herding dogs leading cattle down a mountain to safety. Yet another showed private helicopter owners saving stranded people from mountainsides or dropping supplies into neighborhoods cut off from help. Strangers driving to communities with their Starlink equipment to let people connect just to tell their families they are alive. A woman makes a post on social media to bring supplies to the local park to help those whose homes were damaged or lost. The park fills within two hours with supplies, volunteers, and food.

It helped to see these scenes. It lightened my heart for sure and reaffirmed the strength that Father gives His children in the face of adversity. Even more so though, what I saw in those pictures and videos, well that’s the love of Father working through His children. I guess disasters have a way of bringing out the best in people. I wish it didn’t take that, and maybe moving forward Father’s love will be even more easily shown.

As you begin your day, please continue to lift prayers for those affected by this storm. There are also many ways to help these areas; make a monetary donation to a disaster relief organization, send supplies to the affected areas (many posts on social media tell you what is needed and where to send them), or simply continue to pray every day for the rescue workers, the volunteers and the residents of these communities.

Let’s let Father bring out the best in all of us, all the time, not just during tragedy. We’re all God’s children, let’s do as He asks and be there for each other.

Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
