The Power of Connection

We had a little fun yesterday afternoon, well last evening I should say. My granddaughter called us to tell us about her week. She works part-time at the local YMCA as an after-school counselor. Kids from various schools around the area attend the after-school program. For Halloween, the Y has a contest where the youth decorate the doors of the rooms where they hang out after school. Once decorated, pictures are taken and shared on the YMCA’s social media asking for followers to “like” their favorite door. The one with the most votes at the end of the day on Halloween wins. The youth from that group win the bragging rights and a pizza party 🙂 .

So our granddaughter was telling us about the door she helped the kids from her room decorate. Then the ask came…”Can you please go to my FB page and pull up the post and “like” our door? Well, that was simple enough I thought. She then mentioned, “We really want to win the pizza party”. My husband and I laughed and I pulled up her page while talking to her. I saw all the various doors that were decorated. They were all great, however, ya, I was partial to the granddaughter’s group door 🙂 . I voted for it and told her I’d share the request with a few friends of mine as well. I sent a text to several friends and they responded they be glad to vote.

Well, over the next hour or so the “likes” for her team’s door began to come in. Friends shared with friends, and as of writing of this little blog this morning they have more than double the original votes they had. They have a good shot at winning the party, but there are several days to go.

As I thought about this contest this morning I realized the power of connection. Some would say it’s the power of social media. I believe it’s the power of connection to people, relationships, and friendships that is stronger than social media. Social media is a convenience, but the love of each other, God’s children is what has built the foundation.

The power of the connection we share, well friends, I believe it can change so much. Look at the connections we have seen help so many in Western NC these past few weeks. This friend knows someone who has this to help with that, and before we know it Father’s love is bringing so many together to help so many.

Yes, social media can be a great tool if used appropriately. But…let’s not discount the power of the true relationships we share as God’s children.

Have a great day everyone, and thanks to all who voted for my granddaughter’s team, results to come next week 🙂 .
