Yesterday, I hit the road. Oh, there are a few meanings there 🙂 . I made the drive to Daufuskie Island, SC, to visit Haig Point. It’s a beautiful little community that you can only get to by ferry. Once on the island, you can only move around by foot or by golf cart. To say it’s a little laid-back would be somewhat of an understatement.
I’m here to visit and make plans for the 65 and older golf group that I’m fortunate to work with. I plan their spring and fall events and we’ll be here in April 2025. The fall got away from me dealing with the Milton clean-up, so I had to push the trip off to yes, the week before Christmas. The timing here at least is good though. The island is a little less busy and I can get a good view of everything without too many people here.
Last night I had dinner at their only “restaurant” on the island. There weren’t too many there, as I said the island is pretty slow with residents going to spend Christmas up north. I walked in and a very tall waiter named Tommy greeted me. He shook my hand and introduced himself saying, “I don’t believe we’ve met”. I introduced myself and told him about my visit, to which he replied, “Well I look forward to seeing you back in April”. He asked me where I wanted to sit, it was pretty wide open with choices, so I sat down at a table in the “bar” with a beautiful view of the water.
The service was wonderful and I had fun just people watching. A young couple came in with their daughter, probably three I’m guessing. They were so cute. Another family came in, and then a larger group. They all seemed to know each other, which was no surprise. Like I said, it’s not a big place.
I was just finishing my dinner when a woman came in and wandered into the bar area. She too was greeting people with a smile that went from ear to ear. She came up to my table and said, “Hi, I’m Kaye, I don’t believe we’ve met before”. I introduced myself and just as I had with Tommy the waiter, I gave her the scoop on my visit. We chatted for a few minutes and she looked around the bar area and then asked, “May I sit down here with you?”. I of course agreed.
We spent the next hour talking, literally as if we had known each other for years. She ordered dinner, and we learned more about our families, where we had lived before, what brought her to the island, and so on. She helped me with some options for our group in April, (spouses who come but don’t golf), and told me about a few places to visit before I leave on Friday. She was simply a joy to be around. Kaye gave me her phone number and told me to call her after the first of the year, she would help me get a tour organized for my group in April. Well, now that was easy!
She finished dinner and we decided to call it a night. I think Father brought her into my world last night for many reasons, but the first, well, she helped me get back to the “mansion” where I was staying. One of the crew from the mansion escorted me to the restaurant earlier in the evening. You see it was dark when we left and I had no clue how to make my way back in the little golf cart with my name on it 🙂 . Thank goodness she came along! When we pulled into the drive, Kaye of course knew all the crew out front, the workers putting away the carts for the evening and moving things to the ferry for the morning ride. Kaye and I said our good nights, I thanked her for a wonderful evening and for the “travel assistance”. We wished each other a Merry Christmas and both agreed we looked forward to April.
What a wonderful day and evening. As the title of this little blog says, there simply were no strangers. Isn’t that the way Father wants things to be? We are all His and my goodness if we all treated each other the way I was treated yesterday and last night, my goodness what a place this world would be!
Friends, take a moment today to greet someone you don’t know like you’ve known them for years. A simple handshake and a smile will go miles, and hey it might just be the only smile they see today! Make it a day of “no strangers”.
Have a wonderful day my fiends, and thanks as always for being here 🙂 .
Matthew 25:35
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
