I think I’ve shared in this little blog before the story of the birthday prayer. We had a dear friend, one who became a father figure to me, later in my life, after my dad had passed away. John was a father figure to many in our group of friends. He was not only one of the most faith filled and faithful people that I knew, he was a role model to children, he loved to laugh, and he loved to share his love of Jesus. Yes, John was a special, special person. Oh, did I mention he is one of my grandson’s Godfathers? When the time came to baptize our grandson Austin, our daughter knew almost immediately she wanted to ask John and his wife Brenda to be Godparents.
John had a tradition, each year on your birthday. He would call, or even better if he saw you in person, would say the birthday prayer over you. The birthday prayer is one of the many prayers found in our Book of Common Prayer. It was a special moment when John would say the prayer, you felt so loved, not just by John but by Father.
Why do I bring all this up today…Well today is our oldest daughter’s birthday. Today Heidi, I say this prayer for you, and I’m pretty sure that John shares this prayer from his place in Heaven as well. We love you and wish you the most wonderful day ❤ .
The Birthday Prayer
Watch over thy child, O Lord, as her days increase; bless and guide her wherever she may be. Strengthen her when she stands; comfort her when discouraged or sorrowful; raise her up if she fall; and in her heart may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of her life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
To my daughter Heidi, and all of you who may be celebrating a birthday day, Happy Birthday. May you have a most wonderful day filled with love and happiness, oh and a little cake too 🙂 .
Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
