The Quiet Work

Last night my husband and I spent much time in the kitchen. We stopped by the store on the way home so we were a little later than usual with our dinner routine. We usually find ourselves working side by side in the kitchen making dinner, chatting about the kids, upcoming things on our calendar, etc. Last night though was a little different.

For starters, we were making several meals. Not only were we trying to get dinner on the table for us, we were making dinner for friends for this evening. They have some challenges they are dealing with right now and we want to take the worry about getting dinner on the table, well let’s take that worry off the table for them. Anyway, my husband was preparing the salad for our friends, I was hopping between prep for both dinners and we were just working side by side. It was quiet though. For a long time, neither of us said a word. We were both deep in thought. Occasionally one of us would ask the other a question about what we were doing, then it got quiet again.

I think Father gives us these times, the times when we do quiet work, He gives us these times to just do. We don’t have to be constantly in conversation, we can quietly just put our heart into what we’re doing. When I think about it, isn’t that what Jesus did so often? Many times He was a man of very few words, and He just did. Jesus didn’t want the recognition or the fanfare, He wanted to share the message of His Father and many times that wasn’t done through words, it was done through actions.

Friends, we have opportunities to help others every day, just like Jesus did. There are simple ways to help, to do the quiet work. As we begin the new year may we look for those opportunities, and may we spend a little quiet time lending a hand where we can. And…in that quiet time, let’s listen to whatever Jesus is asking us to do. Let us “Do greater works than these”, as Jesus called us to do.

Have a good day, and hey, do a little quiet work where you can 🙂 .

Ecclesiastes 4:6
Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
