We’ve started to get into a routine while making our way to and from work. My husband and I have taken up calling our kids or grandkids during our commute. It does a couple of things, first we of course are able to catch up with the family, hearing about work and school life, get the latest weather reports, the latest on local life, etc. It also helps us pass the time during our commutes, both here and there. It’s not uncommon for one of us to say, “Well thanks for chatting me to work”.
What we’ve started to find through these becoming more regular conversations, is a reconnection and even deeper relationship with family. Of course, we love our children and grandchildren more than words can ever express, however, being so far away physically makes it difficult at times to stay as close as we were when living just on the other side of town. Our check-in calls every few days while rolling to and from work find us talking as if we were just on the other side of town.
Like so many things in this life, you have to choose priorities, and keeping in touch with family, well, that’s just a given. We have to make time to catch up, to check in, to keep in touch. Family is one of the greatest gifts we have and one that should be cherished. Too often we get caught up in the day-to-day and lose connection with those most important to us. Before we know it days or weeks have gone by and we haven’t even talked with those most important to us. Ya, that’s dumb 🙂 .
So, I look forward to making our “rolling calls” regular events as we stay connected with our family. Friends, as the old song says, “Take time to make time, make time to be there”. Stay connected to those you love, you don’t want to look back and regret that you didn’t.
1 Corinthians 13:13
So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
