The Personal Touch

Yesterday our youngest had to have some minor surgery. Out of respect for her, I won’t go into all the details, just a weird thing that happened with her elbow. We’re still not quite sure what caused it, but we are thankful that the doctors acted quickly and she’s on the mend.

It’s always scary when your kids are sick, no matter how old they are. It’s even more difficult when you aren’t near them. Again, no matter how old they are, you want to be there to hold them and comfort them. You want to be there to talk with the doctors face to face and understand the type of care they are getting. You want to know that the doctors are treating them like people not just going through motions.

Well, yesterday I have to tell you, Father was at work showing us the love instilled in His children. As the morning progressed it was looking like our daughter was going to have the surgery they had been discussing. She was keeping us in the loop throughout the morning and I had asked her to let me know just before they took her downstairs. Well, time passed and I noticed that it was past the time she thought they would take her to surgery. I texted her and got no response, so guessed she had just forgotten or not had the chance to message us before she went to surgery.

Then I felt helpless. I guessed it was going to be a bit and we’d get an update from her when it was all finished. She had told me that her dad and I were listed on her chart to receive updates when we called. I was going to give it a little bit and then contact the nurse to get an update.

Well, God was at work because just minutes later my phone rang. The voice on the other end said pleasantly, “Hi Kim, this is Dr. Anderson, Lauren’s surgeon, I just wanted to call and fill you in on what we’re going to do in a bit”. Um…I was not only relieved and grateful, but kind of shocked. The doctor had taken time to stop and call us to explain the procedure and next steps after surgery. He was so personal, so down to earth and you could hear the sense of caring in his voice. Yes, Father gifted this child of His with not only surgical skills but a caring heart as well. Dr. Anderson filled me in on everything, asked if I had any questions, and said he’d call as soon as the surgery was over.

My husband and I were headed home from work as we waited for the call. As if right on cue, that call came in and yep that same calm voice, “Hi Kim, this is Dr. Anderson, we’re all finished and everything went just fine”. He explained the recovery and that he would see our youngest next week to check on the healing, but he felt everything was going to be fine.

The personal touch that came from this doctor, even though only through a phone conversation, well it was priceless. Our world could use a lot more of this, personal touch and caring. Imagine if we all took just a moment to show compassion to that stranger we don’t know. If we took just a moment to smile at the person walking past us into the grocery store. What if we said good morning to that clerk behind the counter when we buy our morning coffee? We all have the opportunity to show a personal caring touch to people we don’t even know.

I’m grateful for Dr. Anderson yesterday, for not only his skilled handling of our daughter’s issue but for his personal caring touch with us so far away. I thank Father for people like him and I hope that I can share just a little bit of that personal touch with someone today.

Have a great day friends, continued prayers for the return of sweet Emily Rea.
