Outlooks

I returned last night from a wonderful few days with some pretty special people. I’ve been sharing over the last few little blogs about a seniors golf group I work with. They have events twice a year and I am fortunate to be the event planner for them. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, if so, it’s worth mentioning again, this group began in 1965. And…one of its oldest members, (John), turning 89 today, golfed these past few days. This group has been together a long time and is pretty much like family.

I’ve also shared a little bit about the wife of that member I mentioned above. She has dementia, and I’ve been spending a little more time with her. Her husband takes amazing care of her and even though there may be times she doesn’t quite recall who he is, you see the deep love still between them. On our last night in Daufuskie, we made sure to have a birthday cake for John and there was the traditional birthday song, his wife joined in too.

John had asked to say a few words at the end of the evening as well. When he got to the podium he talked about the history of the club, those times when they didn’t know if they would make it, but somehow things always worked out. He talked about the togetherness, the friendship, and the relationships. He encouraged everyone to invite a friend so they could experience the specialness of this group. Then he said he felt this may be their last event, “We’re not getting any younger”, he said as he teared up, (as did the entire room). Then he did something else, he encouraged people to enjoy every day, to smile and laugh and be there for others. I could see Father moving through this wonderful man.

As the evening ended I talked with John and gave him and his wonderful wife one last hug. I hope to visit them soon, they live only an hour or so away from us, I found out that last night as well. I remember feeling sad and joyous all at the same time if that makes any sense at all.

Friends, our outlook on life makes all the difference. Our Lord didn’t bring us into this world and this life to be miserable. He made us to be one with Him and to feel and share the love He gives freely every day. We’re meant to grow, learn, and love through that wonderful relationship we have with Him. He will carry us through whatever comes our way. John showed me that clearly this week.

So, today, let’s stop and take just a moment to give thanks for the blessings in our lives. We all have something, and dare I say, many things to be so thankful for, the first of which, Jesus who gave us the greatest gift of all.

Have a good day friends, please lift a Happy Birthday prayer for my friend John today, 89 years young 🙂 .

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
