It’s one of my favorite Saturdays of the year. Today is Kentucky Derby Saturday! Yes, there is the event’s pageantry the beautiful attire, derby hats and seersucker suits, the fabulous foods of the south, and of course the traditional mint julep! However what we celebrate today is the beauty of one of Father’s most incredible creatures, the horse. In this case the three-year-old thoroughbred.
Male or female, their beauty rivals most any of God’s creations. They are incredibly powerful animals, but yet they can be as gentle and loving as a dove. When they run, which is their passion, it’s ingrained in them, they are almost majestic. Yes, for me, today is about watching these animals do what they love to do.
So, this afternoon we’ll gather with friends, enjoy a little bit of that southern food, and might just partake in a mint julep. We’ll celebrate the pageantry and we’ll marvel at the beauty of the animals.
Friends, as I say so often, Father blesses us in so many ways. Today, take a little time to give thanks for the gift of his creatures, big and small. Hug your pooch or your feline, give an extra treat to your bird, whatever companion you have, give thanks. And…even if you aren’t a derby fan, (don’t have a horse in the race), give thanks for the gift of these incredible animals, and lift a little prayer for their safety as they run the fastest three minutes in sports.
Have a wonderful Saturday, continued prayers for sweet Emily Rea’s return.
Psalm 104:24
O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
