What Settles Your Soul

We’re in the rainy season here in SW Florida. What does that mean? Well, it means that right around 3:00 p.m. every day, a thunderstorm will roll in, dump a lot of rain, and then about an hour later, the sun will shine again. You used to be able to set your watch by it. However, over the past few years, the storms have become less predictable. Don’t get me wrong, we get the rain, but not on that watch-setting schedule. And…there are some areas where you’ll see those dark clouds but not a drop falls.

Yesterday afternoon the rain did come in right on schedule at work. It dumped the usual buckets for a bit and then things stopped just in time for us to head home. My husband and I stopped at the store to pick up a few things, I changed my thoughts on dinner as it looked like the rain wasn’t totally finished, (meaning no grilling outside). On the way home it felt like one of those evenings where you just wanted to be inside, curled up with a blanket and a good movie.

Once home and changed, I noticed the clouds in the distance and heard the rumbling of the thunder, yep right call on no grilling. I began to prep dinner and as I moved around the kitchen I got into my thoughts. The busyness of the day began to slip away. I found myself relaxing and thinking about my mom, (I was making one of her signature dishes for dinner). I recalled those times when she would be in the kitchen preparing this meal, and how she took such care. It made me smile just thinking about her.

I finished the prep and slid the dish into the oven to bake and as I did so I felt Father say to me, “Cooking is good for the soul”. Well, “Yes it is” I thought. I felt relaxed, and in an odd way felt a…well, felt a sense of accomplishment. I realize I was only making dinner for goodness sake, but you know, after a busy day at work juggling multiple things, it felt good to spend a little time making something from scratch. I had quiet time, we didn’t even turn on music. My husband was finishing up some things at his desk in his office and I had time with Father, my thoughts, and my hands 🙂 . Yes, the time settled my soul.

Friends, we all have busy days, we face challenges in our lives, we juggle many things and there are times when we may even get overwhelmed. It’s at those times that we need to do things that settle our soul. If you love to cook or write in a journal, work on an art project, or spend time in your garden, well, do it. Let Father settle in with you and let Him settle your soul. His love will fill you up and before you know it, those little things that may have driven you crazy during the day, well, they’ve disappeared.

Have a great day my friends. Thank you as always for being here to read my little ramblings 🙂 .

Psalm 23:3
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
