The Water & The Kids

Tomorrow is our annual church fishing tournament. Well, actually, we call it our annual “day on the water”. For those who don’t like to fish, there is a boat that takes folks out to an island to shell and sun. It really is a wonderful day for kids of all ages.

I enjoy this event the most for obvious reasons; you all know that the water is my happy place. Having a fishing pole in my hand, the smell of salt air, ya, that pretty much is heaven to me. Hmmm, I wonder if there are special fishing poles in heaven, or is it just stocked with nets to cast 🙂 . Oh, that’s for another blog.

What is even more special about our day on the water is the coming together of families; kids, parents, and even grandparents, to spend the morning in a relaxed way. They’re not scrambling to get kids to school, rushing to work, although they may be dragging out of bed. It’s an early start. But the excitement of being on the water, maybe catching the one “big one”, winning a trophy, it’s so fun to watch. All the while, they are together as a family.

For those who don’t want to stretch their sea legs, we have an awesome BBQ lunch. We’ve used the same small business for years; he brings his smoker and sets up in our parking lot. Everyone comes to welcome the boats back, take a look at the “catch”, and celebrate a day of fun.

These days, when everyone is so rushed, families juggling school and work schedules, to-do lists piled up, and being “connected” digitally 24/7, it’s nice to just have a break from it all. And…the memories that are created, well, they are priceless.

So, I look forward to seeing the sleepy-eyed kids arriving before dawn tomorrow. I look forward to watching them stuff 4 donut holes in their mouth, just because they can. I look forward to the excitement in their eyes as the boats arrive. And…I’ll give thanks to Father for the gift of it all.

It’s so important to carve out time to be together with family and friends. Take the time and make the memories..

Have an awesome day, friends. As a side note, no little blog tomorrow morning. We arrive to greet people before dawn. Ya, that might be the one downside of this event 🙂 .

Mark 10:14
But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.
