Why does it take an event for us to gather with family and friends? Over the past weeks, we’ve spent time with family, many of whom we haven’t seen in a very long time. Today, we will spend even more time together as one. While I’m sad about the reason for our coming together, I feel so fortunate and blessed to see so many. The opportunity to give hugs, catch up, and glean support from those we love is a gift that Father gives us.
So why do we allow the business of life to take priority over spending quality time with those we love? Every time we come together, we tell ourselves, “Let’s get together soon”. Well, every day is an opportunity to be “soon”. We say, “Let’s make a point of getting together”. Well again, every day provides the opportunity to make the plans and do just that, get together.
We are all blessed with family and friends. I get that there are dynamics in every family. Helloooo….we’re all human and no one is perfect. The gift that we are given to gather and share love and support, well, it’s just that, a gift. Life is short, the gift is in front of us, and we lose so much if we don’t accept that gift. There will be a day when the gift is gone, and we don’t want to look back and say, “Why didn’t I call, why didn’t I go see as I had hoped?”.
So friends, I encourage you, this weekend, take a break from the business of your life and make plans to gather with family and friends. Even if you can’t physically be with them this weekend, pick up the phone and call, connect, share, and say your I love yous. Then, make the plans to physically gather together and KEEP THOSE PLANS. Don’t look back when the gift is gone and wish you had done things differently.
Father, thank you for the gifts you have given, most important, the gift of your Son, Jesus. Thank you for the gift of family and friends. Let us never take any of these gifts for granted.
Hebrews 10:25
Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
