Back to Personal

I’m fortunate to be of an age where many of my friends still write, yes handwrite, thank you notes. We all still send real birthday cards, not e-cards. We send hand-addressed and signed Christmas cards. Yes, I love that so many still hold to this practice. It’s personal, and it shows that you took the time to think about someone.

As we arrived home last night, my husband grabbed the mail. He mentioned that I had a note from a friend. I changed and did a few little things around the house, and before I set out to make dinner, I opened the card. What I noticed first is that my friend had written on the back of the card, which usually means you’ve run out of space inside. What I didn’t expect when I opened the card was not only the beautiful pre-printed message in the card, but she had written a note, actually a letter, that spanned every panel of the card, including the back.

It was a heartfelt message that thanked me for many things, but mostly it was just to say how much she valued our friendship. As I read the card, I thought about all the times we’ve been together, the things we’ve done, and the laughs we’ve shared, and realized how many different experiences we’ve had together.

I wiped a tear or two after reading this beautiful message, and I thanked Father for the gift of this sweet and dear friend.

The busyness of our lives has made it difficult to have the personal connection that we so need. We miss opportunities to be together, to talk to each other, or to just send a handwritten note of thanks, or just to say I’m thinking about you. How have we gotten here?

Friends, I’ve said it many times in this little blog. Getting back to some of our “old practices”, like writing notes or calling instead of texting, well, we need to get back there. Our world has become too disconnected, to the point of even losing respect, in my opinion.

So today, do something radical. Stop by the store and pick up a card for a family member or friend. Write something personal in it, and yes, buy a stamp and…drop it in the mail. Ok, if you think you have to take baby steps, then how about just picking up the phone (you know the thing we use now for everything except actually talking), and calling a family member or friend, just to check in 🙂 .

Let your loved ones and friends know just how special they are to you!

Have a good day friends. Special prayers this morning for the friend of a friend, Ritchie who is having some health issues.

James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
