Over the past few days, I’ve noticed something. I’ve noticed the helping hands of so many and the willingness to help with the littlest of things.
As I mentioned in this little blog a few days ago, our annual Christmas Market was this week. It’s a big deal and attracts hundreds of people during the weekend. All of the proceeds go to help charitable organizations in our county. As you can imagine, it’s a ton of work, and we are so blessed and thankful for the volunteers who show up starting at the beginning of the week to transform the empty parish hall into a Christmas wonderland.
I won’t go into all the specifics, but I recruited some young volunteers to help with teardown and clean up yesterday afternoon. I was beyond thankful when they not only said, “Of course we can help”, but they showed up early! No exaggeration, with just over an hour, this group, with a few of our parishioners, had all of the tables, chairs, and Christmas decor knocked down and removed. It was a machine in action 🙂 . The helping hands of those few made such a difference, and they did it with a smile the entire time. And as they left, they said, “We’re here anytime you need us.”
On my way home yesterday afternoon, I had to pick up some supplies for a concert at the church this evening. Again, the helping hands were everywhere. The store manager assisting me with what I needed, willing to go to the back to grab boxes and such for me. The young check-out clerk offering to carry everything to my car. Then, when getting there, the young man who was collecting carts stopped what he was doing to come over and help me get things loaded into my car, “Here ma’am, let me do that for you”.
As I was driving home, I thought about the events of the week, capped off with the wonderful experience at the store, and realized how easy it is to make someone’s day better. Just a little helping hand can make all the difference. A thoughtful word, an offer to carry something, or just asking, “How can I help?”, are showing the love of Jesus in such a simple way. And…they can change a person’s day in a matter of moments.
I just feel our Lord at work lately. His children, helping His children. It’s not hard, it just takes a moment to “Treat others as you want to be treated”.
So today, friends, lend a helping hand, no matter how minor you think it might be. I think you’ll be surprised by the difference you can make. Have a wonderful day, everyone!
p.s. Thanks to our youngest Lauren for the pic of the fall sunset from the Heartland last night, (yep it’s a football game)!
