One of Ten

I’ve shared here before that I receive a daily devotional text from a friend of mine who is a priest. He is taking us through the Ten Commandments right now, and I’ve been learning a great deal from his messages. Yes, I know these ten simple rules that Father asked us to follow. However, digging deeper into them is helping me to see more fully how to best follow them.

The first commandment is pretty clear: “I am the Lord your God. You shall have no other gods before me”. Yep, pretty clear. If you’re like me, you think, well, what other god would I have before Him? My friend elaborated on this for me. He asked, “How are you tempted to worship other gods?” My thought was, “I’m not”.

Then he went on to share, “I am tempted to trust in myself, my pleasures, my possessions, my relationships, and my success, wrongly believing that they will bring me happiness, security, and meaning. I am also tempted to believe superstitions and false religious claims, and to reject God’s call to worship Him alone”. Hmm…that made me think. Yes, I’ve definitely been there, trusting in myself, going it alone without Father. Yes, I’ve put things ahead of my relationship with Him.

Like I said, digging deeper into these 10 rules helps me to see the clearer meaning and not just “face value,” so to speak. The Lord isn’t just saying you won’t have any other gods before me, He is saying you will not put ANYTHING before me. Ahhh, got it!

This morning, I give thanks for the gift of my friend and the way he teaches. I give thanks to Father for the simple rules He gave to us. And…I ask Him to give me strength each day to keep His commandments.

Have a good day, friends. Continued prayers for the return of Emily Rea.
