This day rolls around each year. That’s sort of funny to say, isn’t it? You could say that about every day of the year. The calendar has a way of repeating itself each year. Well, for the past 29 years, I’ve looked at March 10th through a different lens. You see, my mom went to be with Jesus 29 years ago today. I remember that day, well, that series of days vividly, even though it was a very long time ago.
A few weeks ago, I shared a post about grief and how it is different for each person. It’s very true that over time the pain lessens, and the memories that, in the beginning, hurt so much, now bring a smile to my face.
My mom was a simple woman, but don’t let that fool you. She was an incredibly strong woman. She was a fierce protector of her children, kind of like a mother lioness with her cubs. She raised us to work hard, take responsibility, and when we made mistakes, well, she was there to right our paths.
Mom was small in physical stature, but she commanded respect subtly with her quiet presence. She managed the office of a paving company for years, and she took no grief from the large truck drivers whom she met every day. Most just loved her, and the ones who didn’t, well, they still respected her.
When grandkids began to come upon the scene, well, she adored them. To this day, my kids recall the times at “mamaw’s” house. I came across a few pictures the other day, and the look in my mom’s eyes as she held grandkids, well, there was no doubt about the love she had for them.
So, today, 29 years later, I simply say, I miss you mom. I know that you walk with Jesus and enjoy the beauty of paradise, and I know that the day will come when I will be with you again. Thank you mom for loving us, for guiding us, and for being the best mom we could have ever had.
Proverbs 31:25-30
Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
